Household waiting for social housing

Australia is in the midst of a housing crisis. Workers are bearing the brunt. It’s time to act.

Our right to a home

Our Housing Charter sets out a plan to rebuild Australia’s housing system around social need rather than private profit. We are calling for a National Housing Commission to be established in order to deliver a long-term national housing plan.

We need to reform our tax system to prioritise homeowners over investors. Scrapping capital gains tax and capping negative gearing would dampen speculation and prioritise homebuyers. While the federal government has started the important wok of tax reform, more is needed. Housing must serve people, not speculation.

Housing must also be secure, affordable and accessible for all. The Charter calls for greater investment in public housing, affordable housing near workplaces, mandatory inclusionary zoning and a federal Rent-to-Buy scheme. These measures would help ensure that workers, including nurses, teachers, aged care workers and emergency service workers, can afford to live in the communities they serve.

Australia cannot solve the housing crisis without dramatically increasing the speed, quality and efficiency of home construction. A government-backed factory-based modular housing sector would allow Australia to rapidly scale up supply while creating secure, highly skilled union jobs across manufacturing and construction.

The Housing Charter is our plan to deliver secure, affordable accessible homes for working people while creating secure union jobs and rebuilding a housing system based on social need rather private profit.
